Bumpers College Centennial

About the Project

Agriculture Building on the University of Arkansas Campus

The collection of oral history interviews  from retired faculty members of the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences Centennial Oral History Project began during the college’s centennial year of 2005.

Producing graduates with training in scientific agriculture was one of the mandates of the Arkansas Industrial University when it was established in 1872 under the terms of the Morrill Land-Grant College Act of 1862.  The faculty at what soon became the University of Arkansas (in 1899) offered courses in agricultural sciences—a radical departure from the standard university curriculum of the times—but few students enrolled.

The University of  Arkansas College of Agriculture was finally established in 1905; it became the College of Agriculture and Home Economics in 1954, then the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences in 1995.  The oral history project was initiated by a group of current faculty to capture the land-grant spirit of teaching, research and service to Arkansas so evident in emeritus faculty of the college.

Many of these faculty members were World War II veterans who continued their education on the GI Bill and gained international recognition through their research and service.  They never lost their commitment to Arkansas, and their appreciation for the University is evident,  Project leaders were Entomology Professor Randy Luttrell, Horticulture Professor Teddy Morelock and Associate Dean Donna Graham.

In 2006 the Bumpers College oral history interviews were transferred to the Pryor Center for Arkansas Oral and Visual History in the University of Arkansas Libraries Special Collections Department, where they are available to students, researchers and the public.
