Charles Basil "Charlie" Whiteside III was born March 17, 1941, in Fort Smith, Sebastian County, Arkansas.
Whiteside attended the University of Arkansas, where he pledged Kappa Sigma in 1959. He graduated in 1963 with a bachelor's degree in business. After graduation Whiteside enlisted in the United States Army and served in combat in the Dominican Republic.
Upon returning home to Arkansas in 1965, Whiteside launched his career with Merrill Lynch in Little Rock. He became involved in Greek life at the University of Arkansas again as an alumnus, and he and his wife established the Charlie and Cappy Whiteside Greek Life Leadership Center in 2013. Whiteside has served on the University of Arkansas Board of Advisors, Board of Advisors to the Division of Student Affairs, Arkansas Children's Foundation Board of Directors, Episcopal Collegiate School Foundation Board of Directors, and Lyon College Board of Trustees.
