Gordon Daniel Morgan was born in Mayflower, Faulkner County, Arkansas on October 31, 1931.

After earning his B.A. in sociology from the Arkansas AM&N College in Pine Bluff, he served in the US Army during the Korean War. He then received his M.A. from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville in 1956. After teaching in Conway and Pine Bluff, he earned his Ph.D. at Washington State University in 1961. He became the first black professor hired by the University of Arkansas in 1969.

His publications include The Edge of Campus and America without Ethnicity.

He and his wife established the Gordon D. and Izola P. Morgan Graduate Fellowship in Sociology at Washington State University and the Gordon Morgan Family Scholarship for minority students at the University of Arkansas.

Morgan passed away on December 17, 2019.
