At eleven years of age, Huckabee went to work at KXAR Radio in Hope. Upon entering Ouachita Baptist University, he left KXAR and began working full time for a radio station in Arkadelphia. Huckabee earned his B.A. in religion in 1975 and attended Southwest Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, Texas.

Huckabee returned to Arkansas in 1980 where he served as pastor at Immanuel Baptist Church in Pine Bluff and later as pastor at Beech Street Baptist Church in Texarkana.
